“In Secret” Sees Cousins Getting Married

Elizabeth Olsen seems to be no stranger to films involving incest with films likeSilent HouseOldboy, and now In Secret (2014). This film is set in the lower echelons of 1860s Paris, a time of traditional values, incestuous marriages and the unquestioning fear of God. Therese Raquin, a sexually repressed beautiful young woman, is trapped into a loveless marriage to her sickly cousin, Camille, by her domineering aunt, Madame Raquin. The two are also like brother and sister since Therese was sent to live with her aunt and Camille at a young age. They also slept in the same bed together, however Therese does not really have romantic feeling towards her cousin.

Therese spends her days confined behind the counter of a small shop and her evenings watching Madame play dominoes with an eclectic group. After she meets her husband’s alluring friend, Laurent, she embarks on an illicit affair that leads to tragic consequences.
