Savage Grace: Money, Murder, Incest

Savage Grace is a 2007 film about the dysfunctional, incestuous relationship between heiress and socialite Barbara Daly Baekeland (Julianne Moore) and her son, Antony (Eddie Redmayne). It is based on the book Savage Grace by Natalie Robins and Steven M.L. Aronson about the shocking Barbara Daly Baekeland murder case.  The 1972 bloody crime caused a stir on both sides of the Atlantic and remains one of the most memorable American Tragedies.

Barbara married above her class to Brooks Baekeland, heir to the Bakelite plastics fortune. Their only child is a failure in his father’s eyes, and as he matures and becomes increasingly close to his lonely mother, the seeds for tragedy are sown.

The movie is steeped in amoral and sexual behavior among the idle rich, culminating in a sexual relationship between a mother and her son. Barbara is very promiscuous and Anthony makes same-sex encounters. There is also graphic conversations about sex, and a mother-son threesome.

Here is a clip from the film:

Another unhealthy mother/son relationship depicted in a film I would recommend is Ma Mere (2004). There is also more mother & son film & TV posts here.

I watched the movie and I really hated it-not because the two protagonists, or the incest theme. What I hated was the manipulative mother and his so doormat son. This is one of the movies that depicts incest in a negative way-I mean- she uses sex as a powerful weapon- and the “dumb” idea of many people that if a person who you suspect is going to be”gay” or is “gay” will become “straight” if that person engages in “natural” sex. No wonder the son killed her!

  2. Ya I didn’t really care for the movie as a whole for the same reasons you mentioned. I guess it was just trying to show the dark side of incest, and how manipulation can really mess up a person. It is one of many films that depicts incest in a negative way, more often then not there is usually some tragedy at the end of every incest film. Thanks for checking out the film though and writing your thoughts!
